In 1996 some Nair community members from Kanjurmarg, Bhandup and Powai assembled at Powai and decided to form Nair Welfare Society and registered the same under Societies Registration Act 1860 and under Bombay Public Trust Act 1950. Having a headcount of over 1500 members today, NWS is a two-tier organization with five units (Karayogams) at IIT Powai, Outside IIT Powai, Kanjurmarg (W), Bhandup (W) and Vikhroli (E) - Kanjurmarg (E) - Bhandup (E) - Ushanagar.
